Compatibility

How Gorilla Version Pin works next to other plugins, premium plugins, hosts that update for you, and multisite networks.

Other update managers

Version Pin works next to other plugins that control updates, but two plugins deciding about the same updates make it hard to see which one decided. Use one.

When it finds one of these active, the Pins tab says so at the top ("Also active: …"): Easy Updates Manager, Version Locker, Disable All WordPress Updates, Disable Updates, Companion Auto Update, Updatronix, Frozzer, Block Plugin Update and Updates Manager. Version Pin never deactivates or changes them. See Another update manager is active.

Premium plugins

Pins work on every plugin, wherever it comes from: an exact pin holds it, and a version past the pin is refused on every route, including the vendor's own update button if it installs through WordPress. A patch-only pin can only let through what the vendor's updater offers, and Find older-series fixes works only for plugins hosted on WordPress.org. See Premium plugins.

Hosts that update plugins for you

Some hosts and management services update plugins for you. If they update through WordPress or WP-CLI, the pin holds, as for any other update. If they replace the files directly, no plugin is asked, so the pin cannot stop it; the pin then shows Drift, and you can roll the plugin back or raise the pin. If your host offers to leave chosen plugins alone, use that for your pinned plugins too.

Themes and translations

Version Pin pins plugins and WordPress. Themes and translations are not pinned and update as usual.

Multisite

Not supported yet. On a multisite network Version Pin enforces nothing: pins can be saved, but every update goes through as usual. The Pins tab and WP-CLI say so, so nobody relies on a pin that does nothing.

Sites where file changes are disabled

Version Pin works, and administrators can still manage pins, but nothing updates through WordPress anyway. See When file changes are disabled.
